Yun Shou-ping

Artist and poet of the early Ching Dynasty (A.D. 1644-1912), Yun Shou-ping (A.D. 1633-1690) was born in Changchow, Kiangsu. He studied landscape painting at first, but soon turned to plants and flowers, when he saw the landscapes of Wang Hui and realized that there was no chance for him to surpass them. Though his few landscapes have also received favorable attention, it is his pictures of plants and flowers which have exercised a profound influence upon Chinese painting during the Ching period. They have been admired for the scholarly taste of the artists as well as the technical skill. He also excelled in calligraphy.
