Liang Kai
In contrast to Ma Yuan and Hsia Kuei, Liang Kai (13th century A. D.) represented another school of painting in the Southern Sung period. He studied art under Chia Shih-ku, but his mature works excelled those of his teacher. A great master in portraying figures, landscapes and supernatural beings, he often made his fellow members in the Academy of Art gape with wonder and admiration at his unique style. The pictures he left to posterity were, however, all done in bold and brief strokes.
