Cheng Hsieh

Cheng Hsieh, also known by his sobriquet Pan-chiao, was a native of Hsing hua, Kiangsu. He received his chin-shih degree in 1736. Cheng Hsieh was a skilled poet, painter, and calligrapher. As a painter, he specialized in paintings of flowers, trees, and rocks. His works depicting orchids and bamboo are particularly excellent. Cheng Hsieh was also an accomplished calligrapher, his style combines elements from the clerical and standard scripts. He is known as one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangchow.
